NETHERLANDS TOP GROUP B AFTER 2 WINS IN AS MANY DAYS

  • Netherlands defeat rivals Denmark by 54 runs after posting 251/8
  • Norway recover from top order collapse to defeat Spain by 3 wickets

Netherlands vs Denmark

Netherlands remain unbeaten on day two of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier – Europe Division 2. Winning the toss and choosing to bat paid off for a second time as the runs flowed despite a regular loss of wickets. Kevin van der Geest top-scored with 65* playing some expansive lofted cover drives.

Denmark started strong in the reply and were looking comfortable at 100 for 2. The Dutch bowlers managed to break the Danish partnership between Lucky Ali (39) and Musa Shaheen (51) with the score on 124 to get back into the game. The Danish batters struggled to find the boundary after that, with Dutch captain Boris Gorlee (4 for 25) ripping through the middle order to take the game away from the Danes. In the end, Denmark were left stranded all out on 197 in the 44th over. The win puts Netherlands clear at the top of Group B and favourites to gain one of the promotion places to Europe Division 1.

Norway vs Spain

Spain put on an improved performance with the bat, as they set a competitive target for Norway to chase. Several batters started well, however, none went on to post a big personal score. SM Malik and NM Baig took three wickets apiece to restrict the Spanish batters, and in the end, Spain were bowled out for 187 in the 46th over.

Norway’s top order again struggled, with victory looking unlikely as they found themselves on 29 for 4. It was the heroics of captain Hayatullah Niazi (75 off 55 balls) which powered Norway to the win. After coming back from retiring hurt on 45*, Niazi played a determined innings, smashing several boundaries to get closer to the winning score. Spain fought back hard in the English summer heat, taking further wickets, but in the end they were unable to stop the Norwegian’s from reaching the total in the 34th over, with 3 wickets still in hand.
